Free tools to identify and learn about satellites, constellations, solar system planets and very distant galaxies
Aiming the cell phone to the sky may be enough to see and learn about the stars, planets and even other galaxies. It will not be the same as having the last generation telescope but it is a good option to explore the space.
Here, some applications that can be downloaded at no cost and that allow you to enjoy the universe with that small device that accompanies us everywhere: the phone.
The app allows you to view more than 16 thousand images, as well as read the latest news about research and findings of the agency. In addition, through this service you can access NASA TV live as well as more than 14 thousand recorded videos. It is available for iOS and Android.
2. Detector of EEI / ISS Detector
This service allows to identify where the international space station is. An alert is received when it is visible from the user’s location so that the user can identify it. You can also see the Chinese stations Tiangong 1 and Tiangong 2. The remains of the first could fall to Earth at any time and, in fact, there is an alert for the damage it could cause. Available for iOS and Android.
3. Space Images
The app was developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a center responsible for developing unmanned spacecraft for NASA. It has informative images and data about planets, moons, galaxies and more. The photos can be downloaded to the device.
It is an interactive catalog of all known exoplanets. The application was developed by a professional astronomer who is responsible for keeping it updated. Every time a finding occurs, a notification is received. It integrates a map of augmented reality, that is, it is enough to point the phone at the sky to identify the location of an exoplanet. It is available for iOS.
5. Star map
It serves to identify planets, satellites and stars. Powered by augmented reality, by pointing the camera of the mobile to the sky you can know what is being seen and discover thousands of curiosities about each celestial object that is identified. It is available for iOS and Android.
6. Sky View
It allows to identify stars and constellations in a similar way to Star Map. It is also possible to recognize and learn about the different planets of the solar system and other galaxies, as well as see satellites and other celestial objects. It is available for iOS and Android.
7. Star Tracker
This tool is a guide to explore space. Like some of the other apps mentioned above, Star Tracker is used to using the cell phone as a kind of “digital telescope.” Just point the phone’s camera at the sky to see and learn about different constellations.
